What is this course about?

This course provides a theoretical basis and practical activities for the use of expressive therapies in counselling. The course combines theory and practice used in Creative Expressive Arts Therapy within a person-centred framework. As well as theory, we emphasize experiential learning, in which students are encouraged to explore the different dimensions of artistic practice in community and in individual therapy work.

Utilising experiential learning in conjunction with formal lecture material, the course introduces you to the knowledge, practice and skills required by counsellors who wish to include expressive approaches in their work. This course utilises an interactive experiential mode of workshop learning in order to enable a personal appreciation of the relationship and interactive issues present in counselling when using expressive interventions.

We especially encourage intermodal work in our workshops and stress an adult-education model where students are recognized as having the capacity to understand and shape their own learning process. Students are expected to be self-directed in their learning, to work through the obstacles that may interfere with their training and to discover the resources that can help them learn.

Students will experience a rich, exciting, intense, yet playful journey into the tapestry of the authentic self as they move into and beyond mainstream mental health ideas, and into the deeper dimensions of self-realisation; the core of person-centred work

By the end of the course students will have developed a greater sense of self awareness and purpose and will have the creative tools and skills required to assist others to recognise and move towards their highest potential.
