The Advanced Certificate is more than just an excellent and valuable part-time course; it is also a significant milestone for anyone working or volunteering in the helping or caring professions. It's a prerequisite for those wanting to advance to the Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling, ensuring a solid foundation for their career progression.
Philosophy
We believe that a solid foundation in theory and practical skills is essential for effective counselling and therapeutic practices. We emphasise a person-centred approach, creative expression, and ethical practice.
Aims
The course aims to improve students' understanding of counselling theories, develop advanced skills, promote self-awareness and self-regulation, explore creative therapeutic expressive arts, and prepare them for further study in psychotherapeutic counselling. These skills are practical and applicable in various helping and caring professions.
Course Structure
Our in-depth course combines theory and micro-skill practice with clear aims, outcomes, and evaluations. It does not include a clinical element.
The program runs twice a month, with college attendance on Saturdays (September starting).
Our units consist of counselling skills and techniques, professional issues and ethics in counselling, difference and diversity, counselling theories: Person-centred therapy, creative therapeutic expressive arts, advanced counselling skills and techniques and working with children and young people in a counselling setting.
Flexible Timetable
Classes held two Saturdays per month from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and 9:00 am to 12:00 pm to accommodate working professionals.
Additionally, we have a course starting in January with in-person classes in Purley, Surrey held on two Saturdays each month. Depending on demand, we occasionally offer an additional start date in April.
Teaching Methods
A combination of tutor-led lectures, skills practice, and discussions will take place. These will all be student-centred and based on experiential learning methods.
Assessment
The assessment strategy uses various techniques to help learners develop self awareness and self-regulation skills. These include audio recordings, peer-group discussions, tutor feedback, skills practice, essays, journal reflection, and an expressive art project.
Completion
Students will receive the Advanced Certificate in Counselling and Expressive Therapeutic Arts Level 3 upon completion.
